History isn’t always a feel-good narrative, I wish it were. Personally, I believe that at our core, most people are good. I love the nation that has taken shape over the last 250 years and I greatly respect the people of the world as a whole.
Sometimes, though, history forces us to confront darkness. One of the great things about being an American is that I can write about history without fear of physical retribution. But I also know that stepping outside the “safe zone” of state-approved textbooks can be labeled as revisionist, depending on individual beliefs.
What many don’t realize is that acknowledging uncomfortable truths isn’t unpatriotic, it’s part of mapping the path to greatness. By facing our full history the admirable as well of the unforgivable, we acknowledge how we got to this moment, and we create the possibility of a better future. History isn’t just dates or facts; it’s the human story.
I understand that history affects people emotionally as much as intellectually. Because this page covers content that ranges from inspiring to deeply unsettling, I’ve created a tone rating system to reflect each post’s emotional weight.
Since emotional response is subjective, I use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help assess each post according to the scale, not to filter the truth, but to help readers navigate how the story might affect the weight they already carry.
The do no evil, see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil image that accompanies each rating comes from a statue I received from a bazaar in eastern Afghanistan, before U.S. military members were banned from such markets by operational forces to reduce the risk of attack. The statue has stayed with me, a quiet reminder of how we choose to engage with truth, silence, and history.
